It's time to stop pointing fingers on race issues and become truly colorblind

When I heard that a Virginia lawmaker said that blacks should "get over slavery," I was shocked. Yet, after reading more about this incident online, I'm not afraid to say that I see his point.
Frank D. Hargrove made the comment in opposition to a proposal that the state of Virginia apologize to African-Americans for slavery, an idea that should very well be opposed. Mr. Hargrove added: "Are we going to force the Jews to apologize for killing Christ?" Sure, Mr. Hargrove was crass, but I wouldn't want to be judged by my parents' actions or words (not that they did anything wrong), let alone by the words and actions of people who lived centuries ago.
What if Hitler had descendants living among us? Would we trail them shouting obscenities and ridiculing them? Would it fix the wrong of millions of deaths if those descendants wrote a letter apologizing for Hitler's actions?
That's what affirmative action is supposed to be: a fix. I can understand and appreciate affirmative action as a temporary measure, but when does it end?
America has made great progress since the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. articulated his dream, and although we're not quite there yet (and may never be), preferential treatment to "historically disadvantaged" groups isn't the solution.
Laws have been established to protect citizens from discrimination, and instead of supporting this dated system, more effort, time and money should be spent on bettering schools and communities. As for discrimination, by now, major institutions are so afraid of the boogeyman that is the media that they huddle under the security blanket of political correctness. That in itself is sad; we are more afraid to discriminate because of the public consequences than the principles involved.
At least political correctness is not as insulting as an official policy, supported and even mandated at times by the government, that assumes minorities cannot achieve on their own.
This same racial insult has given cover to those who play the race card (e.g. "Is it because I'm {lt}insert religion/race/ethnicity/taxonomy here{gt}?")
It's also become an excuse for intelligent people to sit around and gripe about perceived slights. Imagine hearing your 17-year-old classmate wasting his tremendous eloquence by always talking about how others "don't know what it's like to a black man."
Look, I'm not going to lie; the truth is I don't know what it's like be a black man.
But I do know what it's like to be a minority. And I do know what it's like to have enough pride in my skills to know they will get me where I need to go. And I do know that blaming every failure and misfortune on the color of my skin isn't healthy and isn't a solution.
In this case, apathy is the solution. Let's not care what shade of white, yellow, brown or black our skin is.
No one cares where you're from when you serve them a burger or clean up after them, but at the slightest whiff of power or money, the fight is on.
Let's not care anymore. Let's "just get over it."

لك ان تفخر بها كثيرا..
كتابة ركزت كثيرا علي نقاط جوهرية..اعتقد ان الأغلبيه ضعفت او عجزت عن معالجتها...
العنصرية واشكالها.. والاحساس بها عند الملونين.. وسياسة التمييز الايجابي وكيفية التعامل معها ..حقوق الأقليات ..
أرجـو ان يجـد ماكتبته نضال مساحته هنا من النقاش..فهذا جيل له رؤي مختلفة واكثر واقعية في محاولة معالجة الهوية والحقوق..

Apologizing for past atrocities and historical injustices is not about individual responsibility. The present white Americans are not “individually responsible” for their ancestors’ past. Even if some of the present Americans are relatives of those slave traders, and benefited from the wealth slave trade and, later, the exploitation of slaves in cotton and sugar plantations, has generated.
Apology is about recognizing that something horrible has happened. That millions of people suffered. And that the present people should learn the lessons of the past. The most important lesson being that human beings are equal by the very virtue of being human. If people learnt this lesson, racism would have been consigned to the dustbin of history. But the mentality which justified slavery is still present. This mentality manifests itself in many ways, even though discrimination is prohibited by law.
So, the recognition of crimes in the past would help purge the collective conscience of all Americans, black and white, from both, the guilt and the sense of historical determinism. At the same time, this recognition would help modern-day policy makers to see that discrimination , marginalization and exclusion is a time bomb waiting to explode. Take note of the innate discrimination, hurricane Katrina has exposed, when the areas, mostly populated by blacks, were hit the most by a preventable natural disaster.
Apology is about recognition of mistakes, and about feeling sorry, and about catharsis, and about healing on a spiritual level, and about redressing injustices on a socio-economic level. Because history is not the simplistic notion that “it happened” and finished. No, history doesn’t work like that. History is connected to the present in an organic and dialectical bond. It is a chain reaction. Cause and effect. Hence the concept of “positive discrimination” to redress injustices, to bridge the gap between different ethnic groups, to create opportunities that help equality in real terms.
As ever, Nedal Ahmed is writing thought-provoking articles of immense honesty and intellectual depth .

This is Nedal. I just wanted to thank all of you for your support and for reading my column time and again. Thank you.
And as for Adel: How long are we going to keep apologizing for things that happened in the past? I don't know about you, but for me more than 200 years is enough time. If this apology was a personal thing, I would have slightly less of a problem with it, but that fact that the state legislator wants to waste time issuing apologies for history instead of ammending the effects of that history is really what bothers me. I think things like that are what prepetuate feelings of presumed "racial inferiority." I agree with you that Katrina showed a lack of preparation and really struck poor minorities, so shouldn't government spend its time protecting its citizens' future as opposed to apologizing for archaic policies?. Thanks you for sharing your thoughts, though.

State believed to be the first to pass such a resolution

WASHINGTON — The Virginia General Assembly voiced "profound regret" Saturday for slavery and the exploitation of American Indians, four centuries after the state gave birth to both ills in America.
The House approved it on a 97-0 roll-call vote Saturday in Richmond, and the Senate followed suit with a voice vote later in the day.
The expression of remorse, said by Virginia legislators to be the first of its kind in the country, comes amid a season of soul-searching before May commemorations of the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in America, at Jamestown in 1607.
"The moral standards of liberty and equality have been transgressed during much of Virginia's and America's history," the resolution states. It labels slavery "the most horrendous of all depredations of human rights and violations of our founding ideals in our nation's history."
The bill's chief patron in the House, Del. A. Donald McEachin, 45, is the great-grandson of a slave.
"Words matter, and expressions of regret and apology matter and are important for the healing process," he said.
McEachin, a Democrat, said his office has been contacted by aides from legislatures in Mississippi, Maryland and Missouri — all expressing interest in passing similar resolutions.
Twelve years after the original settlers founded Jamestown, 20 elected burgesses convened there with the royal governor and appointed council of state, meeting as the general assembly. It was the first representative body of government known to have met in the Western Hemisphere.
Three weeks after that historic assembly, a Dutch warship sold the colonists 20 Africans stolen from their homes near present-day Angola.
In the decades that followed, the Virginia General Assembly passed a raft of legislation concerning slavery, culminating in the comprehensive slave code of 1705.
"It may have been the cradle of democracy, but it was also the cradle of slavery," said Roger Wilkins, professor of history and American culture at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. "It's a state that's standing on that mixed history and making apologies for its past."
Even so, Virginia legislators struggled for weeks about the precise wording of the resolution, rejecting a formal apology and turning back efforts to include words like "atonement" or "contrition," as some legislators sought to avoid any sentiment that might open the door to reparations.
